THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE NAME

“I hope you can duck Hamish”

Netherfield is the name of a cricket club in Cumbria, Northern England.

Netherfield is a significant place for me for two reasons. It invokes a feeling of calm and happiness when I picture the green fields and blue skies. But Netherfield also provided me with one of my earliest life lessons - a quality result is about more than just the scoreboard. It’s about a quality contest. Netherfield is where I played against Jacques Kallis just before his test debut. Kallis went on to be one of the greatest cricketers to play the game. With cries of “I hope you can duck Hamish” ringing in my ears I picked one beautiful ball and dispatched Kallis to the boundary for four runs. My cricketing legacy was complete.

Beyond a great anecdote, when I think of Netherfield it reminds me not to settle for an average result but instead always to seek out a quality contest and deliver an outstanding one.
